Well, after waiting for, and bombarding Sony and the ATF
fan sites with requests to get these classic new wave albums remastered
onto CD for many years here (at last) is apparently the complete
collection. BUT - no, not quite complete.
A key single is absent and is now their only vinyl release to remain
unavailable on CD.
It is the 1979 Tony Mansfield produced single version of "Life In The
City" - my favourite ATF single - it was the single which got me into the
band.
This collection does contain the original long album mix which was
produced by ATF (incorrectly / misleadingly stated as being produced by
Tony Mansfield in the booklet credits), but the superior absent single
version featured additional keyboards / percussion, and was generally
thickened up, and was sensibly edited down. It also received a lot of
Radio One airplay at the time - despite it not officially charting.
In comparison, the version contained on this set merely sounds like a
work-in-progress demo. At just a little over 3 minutes the single version
would have fitted nicely onto disc two in place of the pointless
re-recording of "Starflight" (which can already easily be found on the ATF
CD compilation "Der Kommissar").
Lyrics to all of the songs are contained in the booklet. However, the
sound quality (although not poor) could be a lot better.
For these reasons only 4* when this could have otherwise easily been 5*
Recommended - but not a complete CBS / Epic collection of the band. |
